SD cards with an impressive storage capacity of 128 TB could one day become reality thanks to a new format that has just been announced by the SD Association, the agency responsible for defining SD card standards.
The new format is called SD Express and expands existing SD cards with PCI Express and NVMe interfaces. These changes allow the cards to increase their maximum transfer speed to 985 MB / s and their maximum storage capacity to 128 TB, beyond the current limit of 2 TB. The 128 TB cards would be referred to as SD Ultra Capacity. SD Ultra capacity). However, the new SD Express format also applies to SDXC and SDHC cards and is available in SD and micoSD formats.
The SD Association claims that one day SD Express cards could effectively replace the SSD and HDD storage of laptops. “With SD Express, we are delivering a whole new level of memory card with faster protocols to turn cards into removable SSDs,” said Hiroyuki Sakamoto, president of SDA.
“SD 7.0 [the latest specification] offers breakthrough innovations to anticipate the needs of future devices as well as content rich and fast applications.”
SD Express cards could be particularly useful for the photographic and video industries because they are capable of transferring large files, whether 8K video or RAW images. In fact, a 128 TB card could be used to store more than 25 million songs, 25,000 HD movies, or about 256 million photos.
Although the SD Association says that 128TB cards are possible, it may take a while for them to hit the market. Even if this is the case, you should start saving, because cards with a meager 512 GB or 1 TB of memory can cost hundreds of dollars.
